Why Donate?

Assalamu Alaikum,

We are living in unprecedented times. It is easy to get lost in your thoughts when the future is clouded and anything can happen at a moment’s notice. However, we must also think about people that are suffering more than us. Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said,very few ”Look to those who have less than you, and do not look to those who have more. This is more appropriate so that you do not overlook (or undervalue) the blessings of Allah that you have.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “Protect yourself from hell-fire even by giving a piece of date as charity.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) Is it really wise to risk hellfire for eternity? You might say that donating a date is nothing and results in something minimal in the Hereafter but the Quran states, “The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies ˹the reward even more˺ to whoever He wills. For Allah is All-Bountiful, All-Knowing.'' in Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 261. Charity even negates sins as Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “Charity extinguishes the sins like water extinguishes a fire.” (Ibn Majah) Now what can you be afraid of when donating? Are you afraid of losing wealth? Even the price of a cup of coffee can feed a person. This will not detract from your wealth as Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, ““Giving in charity doesn’t decrease your wealth in the slightest, and the person who pardons is not increase except in honor and there is no person who is humble for the sake of Allah, except that Allah will raise his rank.” (Muslim) Remember that Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said, “None of you [truly] believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Bukhari and Muslim). If you desire prosperity and comfort, why don’t you help your brothers and sisters through Adam عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ achieve that as well? Assalamu Alaikum and remember it is never too early to invest in the Hereafter.
