Within the last year, I learned about the emphasized sunnah of Tahiyyat ul-masjid ("greeting of the masjid"), that is praying two rakat upon entering the masjid. I've tried to be mindful of this sunnah as I think it has a lot of benefits. It's quick, it's easy, it gives you more of a respect for the masjid, and it also helps to transition you into the mindset of salah.
Upon reflecting on this sunnah, I realized that for those who are able to frequently get to the masjid for their prayers and who are able to perform the tahiyyat ul-masjid, they are able to easily do quite a bit of extra rakat (i.e. maximum 10 extra rakat per day). In order words, the approximate number of fardh+sunnah rakats of prayer per day is 40, so with the extra tahiyyt ul-masjid rakat, it's 50.
For those who are not able to frequently pray in the masjid, I wonder if there is anything in the Islamic sources that suggests it is of benefit to make these extra two rakats per prayer even if praying from home. Obviously they would be only nafl and wouldn't have the same reward as doing them in the masjid. Anyone have any knowledge of this?
