Genuine question - if someone told me that's not theist, "Why hasn't God helped the people that are suffering on this earth?" -- What would be the answer?

Just to start off - I'm not questioning God. I got this question multiple times and I answer differently each time and they seem content with the answer but I just wanted to be sure... Can someone give me a solid, consensus about the question? Thanks / Jazakallah
