Islam orders to not reveal your sins.
I think that those who post on reddit about their sins are also guilty of exposing their sins, in fact they are doing worse. Making a public announcement of your sin behind a curtain is much worse than confiding your sin to one or two persons in private.
Let's take the example of zina.
The sin must be hidden from the Muslim community so that immorality and disrespect does not spread. Anonymity on Reddit makes no difference.
Probably 100000 Muslims read someone's post that they committed zina. Here are the possible consequences:
Muslims would think zina is widespread in the Muslim community. Those who strive for chastity would be demoralized. Those who save themselves for marriage would be demoralized. Those who are already inclined toward this sin would likely downplay this sin like "Oh, others also do this."
Personally, I go through a lot of depression. I am very proudly a jealous person and to think so many people commit zina before marriage disillusions me toward marriage. I am sure many other people, both men and women, would be likewise disillusioned with marriage. We are going to respect each other less and less.
Who is responsible? All those people who commit zina as well as those people who expose it on Reddit are responsible.
While this subreddit takes a compassionate stance those these people, I do not respect them much (however I refrain from writing anything negative to them). Yes, Allah forgives all sins if you sincerely repent. But there's no guarantee that you will get a sincere heart to repent if you commit sins this many and this enormous.
Crying about their sins to people on reddit does not guarantee they have sincerely repented. Posting on reddit is sometimes just a panic-driven response which subsides very fast. We don't know anything about how sincere they are.
