A very dangerous major sin I will remind you of today is Riya.
Riya is defined as doing an act of worship to show off in front of people.
Any worship will not be accepted by Allah except when 2 conditions are fulfilled:
-
Sincerity: To only do it for the sake of Allah.
-
Following the Sunnah: By performing the worship as the Prophet (ﷺ) taught us.
The one who commit Riya can maybe perform an act of worship according to the Sunnah
But the first condition is not fulfilled since he seeks people's praise instead of Allah's Pleasure and Reward.
So his act of worship will be rejected by Allah.
In a hadith recorded in Sunan Tirmidhi (2382), The Prophet (ﷺ) narrated a story of three people who will be the first to be thrown into Hell.
One may think that these are the murderers, the thieves, etc.
But these people were among those whom people praised.
A scholar, a generous giver, and a mujahid.
From the outside, it can appear that they did a ton of good deeds.
But they had a huge problem.
They were showing off all the time.
The praise of people was more beloved to them than the Pleasure of Allah.
So when they meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection.
They will be utterly exposed and meet an awful and sad end.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"These three are the first of the creation of Allah who will be dragged into the Fire on the Day of Ressurection." (Tirmidhi 2382)
So beware of Riya and work hard on purifying your intentions before each deed.
Make some of your good deeds a secret only Allah, and you know of so that you can meet their reward in the Hereafter.
