I posted this in r/MuslimMarriage but it was removed

Hi, I'm posting on behalf of my roommate who hates reddit as a platform too much to create an account himself. I'll call my roommate A and I'll call his girlfriend B. If it's relevant A is American and B is Indonesian.

A was raised as a Christian but doesn't really believe in anything, he calls himself an agnostic. B and her family expect A to convert to Islam before marrying her, and this is where the problems start to arise. A is willing to convert but mostly just for appearances, A doesn't want to actually practice the religion and openly does not genuinely believe in Allah or any of the tenets of Islam. A is willing to keep up appearances for the sake of B's family and community but has been clear with B that he does not really believe in any of it and will only do the stuff that's necessary to keep up the appearance that he is a devout Muslim.

Recently B has asked A to talk with local Muslim leaders to discuss his additional responsibilities as a Muslim husband and head of a household, but she won't herself elaborate on exactly what responsibilities she's expecting of him and he's concerned that now she's trying to push more of the religion on to him than he is actually comfortable with.

He has also read a lot of advice online in forums and stuff from other people who have gone through similar experiences and that advice was generally that those people shouldn't convert for marriage unless they actually believe because that's a sin in Islam.

He'd appreciate any advice or thoughts.
