If there is an opportunity to sit in the gathering, should sit instead of standing.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (R.) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you arrives at the gathering, let him give the Salam. So if sitting reveals for him (that is, if he has the opportunity to sit down), let him sit down (to the gathering). Then when he stands (to leave), let him give the Salam. Because the first Salam (that is, to arrive at the gathering and then give Salam) is not more deserving than the last Salam, (rather both Salams are of equal importance)".

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا انْتَهَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى مَجْلِسٍ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ فَإِنْ بَدَا لَهُ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ فَلْيَجْلِسْ ثُمَّ إِذَا قَامَ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ فَلَيْسَتِ الأُولَى بِأَحَقَّ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ ‏"
