I am a residential construction worker in Colorado, so my work often requires that I interact with residents who are renting homes from property management companies. This line of work deals very much with people/customer interaction skills (which, admittedly, I'm already not the best at), as I am entering into other peoples homes and trying to help keep the property in good shape. I've seen a lot of weird stuff, but the other day I came upon a completely new situation.
I had to replace an oven, which is easy enough. I have had a few other customers who practiced Islam, but this occasion fell at the exact time for prayer. She was kneeling in the living room and praying, which happened to be the path I needed to take with the oven. I kind of stood there awkwardly to wait until she was done with prayer, and the other residents kind of looked at me funny. I wasnt sure if it was disrespectful to keep working or to move around her while she was praying. I would like to know what the proper etiquette is in these situations.
I was raised in a pretty anti-islam family, and haven't really been properly educated on Islam or it's customs. What is the most respectful way to handle that situation? Should I have kept working around her or stayed put? If you have ever been in a similar situation, I would love to hear your perspective.
