Assalamualaikum brothers and sisters,
I am trying to understand the Islamic conception of the soul and consciousness in Islam more fully. As I understand it, animals are said to have consciousness of God. At the same time (and please correct me if I am wrong) it is understood that animals do not have free will. Does this mean that, while animals are conscious, they do not have a Ruh/soul?
One of the ways I have heard Islamic people deal with evolution is the theory of ensoulment, which is to say that evolution happened, but at some point in the timeline Allah SWT breathed a new soul and that this was the first human. Am I right in thinking that the soul of man, that which seperated him from the animals, is his free will? Is the soul synonymous with free will? Does the soul have anything to do with consciousness or are these different things?
On a similar note I understand that there is sahih hadith which narrates that the souls of martyrs can be found in green birds. Is this a form of reincarnation? Do these birds suddenly have free will?
Any comments or materials which can help me understand these terms more clearly is appreciated.
JazzakAllah Khair
