I live in a country where Islam is the majority of the religion here (prefer not to mention the country name, but you might be able to guess based on the cases I mention). I understand that in most western country, Islam got quite discriminated against especially after 9/11, and Islamophobe is still a big issue even now.
However, I also noticed that in my country, we also tend to discriminate minority, whether unconciously or subunconciously. Several cases for example:
- It's much harder to get permission to build Church/Other prayer place compared to Mosque. Even if you got permission from the local administrator, there are still a high chance that the local people will complain about it. In some case, they even burn/destroy the prayer place.
- Someone got arrested under blasphemy crime just because they casually complained about adzan noise.
- During the Ramadhan, some group of people would demand the minority to stop selling food in public during the day. They even patrol place to place and forcefully shut down the shop. I don't understand the logic of this since we should be the one who keep our own temptation in check instead of other people, but it does happen in some regions.
- You'll definitely get a prefential treatment if you're a moslem (better job advancement in some institution).
- There is a public school where a christian student was forced to wear hijab by the school, even though it's not an islamic school.
Yes, not everyone in the country behave that way and it might be a cases of a few but noisy radicals, but the intolerant cases number keep rising up recently.
So I'd like to know your objective opinion about this matter, especially if you also live in a country where the majority of the people is Islam. Also, how do the people in your country usually treat the minority? Is it just and fair?
