As some of you may know, I'm an English teacher. I live in Asia and whilst most countries here will and do hire English teachers, the biggest market for English language teaching, and some of the higher salaries, are in China.

Now there was a time when I considered going there to work. This was before the whole situation with the Uighur Muslims came out and became more publicized. Even then I had reservations given I was aware of the state's involvement in religious affairs.

People are telling me that I'm 'silly' (their words) for not at the least looking at going there 'for the experience'. However from my point of view, I would be deeply unhappy about accepting money from China at a time when fellow Muslims are being oppressed. It would not seem right, at least for me personally, and even seems a little hypocritical or morally questionable, like I'm turning a blind eye to oppression when the money is right. At the same time I don't want to brush 1bn people with the same brush, in the same way that I wouldn't want people to do this to Muslims.

Any thoughts?
