Hi all, I'm trying to explore this aspect of Islam.
We are told in the Quran that Allah does not need anyone to worship him, and yet if we do not worship him actively (in the form of prayer, etc), then there are consequences in the after life.
This seems paradoxical to me in a way, because if he truly did not need us, then why would he punish us for lack of worship since worship is something that is of no direct consequence to society?
I know that you can argue that failure to worship is "bad for the soul" or that lack of ritual paves the way for a worse society, so that's why it's punishable, but I feel like that's kind of a weak argument, especially when there are already clear rules about how to conduct yourself within a society to bring about goodness for yourself, your family, and everyone else.
So why is do humans deserve eternal hellfire for not worshipping if God really doesn't need us to worship?
Thanks
