Why do English speakers use (Peace be upon him) when they refer to the prophet? Arabic speakers don't do that

In arabic pbuh is used for other prophets and some other significant characters. In Arabic and some other languages people use some variation of (salla allah alaihi wa sallam (excuse the rough transliteration)) (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Does anyone know if there is a specific reason? And how would you translate (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and explain its meaning in English correctly? Thank you
