Hi, I wanted to post something below that my friend an I made because it's an issue that I've been seeing floating around that I had never known about. Even though I'm a newbie Muslim, I joined various Muslim groups on Facebook and what-not and I've seen a certain person keep posting images and articles on female circumcisions and how they are obligatory for Muslim females and it really rubbed me the wrong way. It's an odd subject for me but apparently, after all our research, it is a phenomenon (not going to say crisis, if you will) that is gaining popularity in certain African and Asian countries. It's kind of an underground practice too since in almost all countries FGM is banned. They site all these weak hadiths to prove that females must be circumcised and they claim it's only the prepuce or clitoral hood that is removed (sorry this conversation is about to get real, so it's not for children). To me, it's a little bizarre but I try to be respectful about it because I do believe a woman has rights to her body, but Allah has rights to our bodies also.
The main group that is posting stuff about it being mandatory is a facebook group called "Islam is my choice" and being that I have Christian family, unfortunately I couldn't just comment to debate against their posts, otherwise people in my family would see it and get completely upset about the subject I'm debating, so my friend published the article we wrote below, so I wouldn't have to. So, please, for those interested, can you read it and maybe we can make solid conversation on the topic and get some enlightenment. It may not be the best writing but we kinda just threw it together with all of our best resources.
So here it is:
Allah made all the woman, each beautiful and different in their own ways; each respected and adored;to be protected and never harmed.
THE PROPHET (S.A.W.) SAYS “OUR BODY HAS RIGHTS OVER US”- AL-BUKHAARI. WE SHOULDN’T TRY TO ALTER OUR BODY UNLESS IT’S FOR MEDICALLY NECESSARY REASONS.
From the people of the Torah, to the people of the Gospel (Bible), to the people of the book (Muslims), male circumcision has been a common practice believed to be made mandatory by God and from the first books (that Muslims are told to believe) to the Quran, none have ever stated the ceasing of the practice. In fact, were it of immense importance, wouldn’t it be mentioned clearly in the Quran? Yet, the circumcision of females is an unfamiliar act that is not rooted in Islam.
It's a cultural practice that has it's roots traced back to Africa, during the slave trade days and even in Egypt, it was used for spiritual reasons and mummies have been found having been circumcised.Yet, "the Dawoodi Bohra community has been practicing this hidden ritual of female circumcision, also known as Female Genital Cutting (FGC), for centuries." and "Shafi school of Sunni Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia justifies FGC as an Islamic practice and is culturally influenced by the Eastern part of the Arabian peninsula, the region where presently Yemen and Oman are situated. The justification for the practice in these countries come as they prescribe ‘nicking’ of the outer clitoral skin without really injuring the female genitals."
Most countries, today, have all banned these types of practices sometimes calling them, FGM, or female genital mutilation which is defined as, "the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons." according to the W.H.O.What started from Egyptian and African cultures as cutting the genital area to SUPRESS the woman's sexual appetite or desires has now spread to an underground group of thoughts to INCREASE sexual appetite and pleasure. Interesting cases have been made on both sides but with more education, Muslim woman should be free to choose what they would like to do with their bodies after educating themselves on this underground issue.
Not only have these odd procedures been happening all over the world, these rituals have been proven to be risky and dangerous. Just because some woman wants to get their eyebrows, stomach, nose, lips, or private parts pierced doesn't mean they should. “It will enhance our beauty and will be pleasing to us” woman say, and this is the same excuse they use for the cutting of the private parts; for pleasure. What’s pleasing to you is not always good for you. You can fulfill your sexual desires naturally with the body that God has created for you without altering it. It's important that you decide for yourself how you treat your body.
PEOPLE FOR THE PROCEDURE QUOTE VARYING WEAK HADITHS AND MAINTAIN THAT IT IS OBLIGATORY FOR WOMAN TO HAVE IT DONE. NO WHERE IS THIS STATED IN THE QURAN.
Reasons Why female Circumcision is not made mandatory.
· You won’t find a law about it in the Quran, even though the Quran has a dedicated chapter for women.· There are no authentic hadiths that state clearly that woman have to perform circumcision, if it was law then it would be made crystal clear.
· There are no rulings in the Torah or the Gospel that teach circumcision of women, and as Muslims, we must believe in all books.· Getting a “clitoral hoodectomy”(involves cutting small flap of skin) involves risks like irritation, sensitivity, swollen wound, bruising, abnormal bleeding, abnormal discharge, inflammation or infection in some cases.
· Cutting of the clitoral hood or prepuce is very high risk since it sits just above the most sensitive spot of a woman’s body.· If Surgery procedure is not done correctly it can lead to heighten sensitivity in a woman’s private parts, discomfort, and pain.
· According to Healthline, there are over 15,000 nerves in a woman’s clitoris and the hood, the flap of skin that protects the woman’s clitoral glands, helps create a barrier of contact, because, even indirect contact to the clitoral glands is highly sensitive to a woman. The clitoral glands, therefore, are what help reach a climax, or orgasm for woman, so removing the clitoral hood or protection piece, especially, in a young person, can create vulnerability and exposure.
· Unlike a hoodectomy, female genital mutilation, as described by the W.H.O. is “all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons” and is banned in most countries because it involves medical procedures of high risk and complications and is declared cruel or inhumane.· No clitoral hood is the same and they are needed for various duties. 1. They secrete a natural lubricant called sebrum, in which the hood can move smoothly over the glands. 2. It contracts and expands upon sexual arousal that’s needed for intercourse. 3. It keeps the sensitive clitoral nerve glands from being irritated throughout the day by anything from tight-fitting clothes, to riding a bike, to constant rubbing.
· Most woman’s clitoris parts can be kept clean by simple good hygiene procedures like soap and warm water. If you experience something worse like a abrasion, cyst, or pain then you can see a doctor for options.
· Beauty and looks should not come to determine if you should get this procedure done. Woman who get surgeries for their private parts are becoming more and more popular just like the plastic surgery for other parts of women’s bodies. This is vain. A surgical procedure like this should only happen if you have an abnormality (like an enlarged hood) or pain and discomfort. Woman are beautiful already.
A strong Hadith Narrated by 'Abdullah: that the Prophet (ﷺ) cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who seek to be tattooed, the women who remove hair from their faces seeking beautification by changing the creation of Allah.
The people for the cutting of the clitoral hood state many hadiths that are not authentic or that you can tell have been twisted or altered over hundreds of years of time. For example. Let's go through some..
Narrated Abu Hurairah:The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: The inborn characteristics of man are five. Another version says: Five things are of the inborn characteristics of man: circumcision, shaving the pubes, plucking out hair under the armpit, paring the nails and clipping the mustaches. Sahih (Al-Albani)
Notice that the Prophet (ﷺ) is speaking directly to the males on this hadith. Secondly, why would he advise woman on how to cut their mustaches!?
Narrated `Abdullah bin Yazid Al-Ansari:The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade robbery (taking away what belongs to others without their permission), and also forbade mutilation (or maiming) of bodies. Sahih al-Bukhari 2474.
Another strong hadith above. We should not alter our bodies which were perfected for us by Allah S.W.T.
"When (a man) sits between the four parts of his wife's body and exerts himself, then Ghusl becomes obligatory."
The above hadith is highly criticized for different variations of what it means. Some have said this hadith saying, "when two circumcised parts meet" but this is more likely the original hadith. The emphasis is on washing yourself after sexual intercourse. There were however, people still practicing circumcision because even Hamza cried out in anger, at the battle of Uhud, before killing a man who was known to have been circumcising many woman. There is even a hadith that we're made to believe that says.. Narrated Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah:
A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The circumcision from this woman was well-known and couldn’t be put to an end evenThe Prophet (ﷺ) had to say to her: Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband.
Abu Dawud said: It has been transmitted by 'Ubaid Allah b. 'Amr from 'Abd al-Malik to the same effect through a different chain.
Abu Dawud said: It is not a strong tradition. It has been transmitted in mursal form (missing the link of the Companions).Abu Dawud said: Muhammad b. Hasan is obscure, and this tradition is weak.
We know this hadith is weak yet they still use it. Do you really believe the Prophet SAW would accept this kind of behavior or would it be fitting to think that this lady was performing this cutting for medical necessity or something that was abnormal or causing her pain? We do not know. But what we do know is that these hadiths are weak and and that
No hadith has ever been directly made for the female circumcision or cutting!
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Said ibn al-Musayyub said, "Ibrahim, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the first to give hospitality to the guest and the first person to be circumcised and the first person to trim the moustache and the first person to see grey hair. He said, 'O Lord! What is this?' Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, said, 'It is dignity, Ibrahim.' He said, 'Lord, increase me in dignity!' "
Yahya said that he had heard Malik say, "One takes from the moustache until the edge of the lip appears, that is the rim. One does not cut if off completely so that one mutilates oneself."
You can find hadiths pertaining to men circumcision crystal clearly.
Ibn Shihab said, "When a man became Muslim, he was ordered to have himself circumcised, even if he was old."
Another hadith that they use against my view is this
An old woman from Kufa, the grandmother of 'Ali ibn Ghurab, reported that Umm al-Muhajir said, "I was captured with some girls from Byzantium. 'Uthman offered us Islam, but only myself and one other girl accepted Islam. 'Uthman said, 'Go and circumcise them and purify them.'"
This hadith comes from Da'if (Al-Albani) and is the weakest source of hadiths. This is also coming from the time of Uthman which is far later than the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.. It seems like the very practice that Hamza was trying to abolish crept back in Islam. In fact, if you ask many people they will tell you that Islam and the Sahabah tried to rid the people of all these taboo practices but just like alcohol, it would take a long time for these dangerous addictions and rituals to be gone.
Narrated 'Abdullah:
that the Prophet (ﷺ) cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who seek to be tattooed, the women who remove hair from their faces seeking beautification by changing the creation of Allah.
Before you seek to change or alter what God made natural for you, please think about your body, "lest your ears, and your eyes and your skins should testify against you..." (41.22)Our daughters are precious to us and need to be protected until we give them for marriage. If the clitoris contains 15,000 highly sensitive nerves, don't let your daughter cut any part of it, exposing her to risks of extreme sensitivity if she were to ride a bike, run, wear tight clothes that rub, or engage in some sort of physical activity that might perhaps cause her to have enough friction to experience an orgasm before she's even married. If a female has a serious medical problem that needs attention then yes, do what is allowed to fix the pain. Please, understand the implications of the procedure and use your own knowledge to decide if you think it's a necessity. Afterall, it's your body.Allah wants the best for you and the healthiest body. Peace be unto all woman, who are a beautiful creation of Allah.
