I was doing a lot of research into the quran and general Islamic faith and I am genuinely interested due to its seemingly progressive values (such as charity), however I came across a bunch of quotes from the quran that were violent and seemed very non-progressive. One example was:
"... Wherever you encounter [nonbelievers], kill them, seize them, besiege them, wait for them at every lookout post ..."
My question is: is there a story behind this quote? One that sheds light on its violent and... well, seemingly savage intentions? Is this a value that Muslims uphold? I'm aware Christianity has a slew of similar quotes, but as an Atheist, it would be hard for me to convert to Islam knowing that I would be signing to a value like this. Thanks in advance for your answers.
