REMINDER I come to this subreddit in good faith, have no intention to debate nor do I mean any disrespect.
I love you guys as my fellow brothers and sisters in humanity and assume most of you love me the same way too. As an exmuslim, the minimum I want is to be able to freely leave Islam without the scorn or threat by my family and the wider Muslim community which often more times than not isn’t the case.
The only countries that have apostasy laws are Muslim countries and sadly exmuslims face bigger challenges to other apostates of other major religions. Even if you’re still denying the reality of the problem, just ask yourself how many people in your family are you CERTAIN would respect your right to leave Islam if you ever did so? And that’s the exact reason why we call ourselves exmuslims, it’s in order to challenge the taboo and stigma surrounding Islamic apostasy.
But just because I’m exmuslim, don’t assume we all left for the same reasons or for lazy reasons like “we wanted to sin freely” (in fact that never came to the equation for me and I first promised myself not to drink, smoke, eat pork or have sex outside marriage when I first left) or that we brought into the bigoted right-wing propaganda against Muslims. However I do accept there’s a minority that do and are bigoted (I’ve seen it on r/exmuslim) who call Muslims “non-violent nazis” and support immigration bans and limits on Muslims. But just as I don’t see Muslims as a monolithic bloc, I hope you don’t characterise exmuslims the same way.
I accept Muslims do indeed face challenges too, from the rise of islamophobic far-right parties in most of Europe and western imperialism and wars to the rohinyga and ugyhur Muslim genocide. But the political and social challenges that Muslims in the west and in most non-Muslim countries is 9 times out of 10 in no way comparable to the challenge that exmuslims face in the Muslim world. Sure you may have faced casual islamophobia and institutional discrimination but at least you aren’t in hiding your Muslim identity to the point were you’d face legal punishment ranging from losing child custody to facing death.
This old post I made from r/exmuslim probably explains anything else I haven’t mentioned
Thank you.
