Translated answer of the Muhaddith Sh. Hadith al Shiraida (h):

Answer by Shaykh Harith Al-Shiraida: As for the narrations of the Islām of ˋUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه) stemming from a confrontation with his sister who had embraced Islām and was reciting the Qur’ān when he walked in on her and her husband (and Khabbāb ibn al-Aratti according to some accounts), then they come from a number of paths as reported by:

  1. Ibn ˋAsākir in Tarīkh Dimashq (44/28-29): By way of Umm ˋUmar bint Ḥassān ibn Zayd ath-Thaqafiyyah, from her husband Saˋīd ibn Yaḥyā ibn Qays ibn ˋIsā, from his father.

Yaḥyā ibn Maˋīn said concerning Umm ˋUmar: ليست بشيء – “She is nothing.” And her husband Saˋīd ibn Yaḥyā is majhūl (unknown), as well as his father.

  1. Abū Nuˋaym in Dalā’il an-Nubuwwah (1/241-243) and Ibn ˋAsākir (44/29-31), both with an isnād to ˋAbd-ul-Lāh ibn ˋAbbās by way of Muḥammad ibn Abān ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Qurashī, who was weakened by Abū Ḥātim ar-Rāzī, ibn Ḥibbān, Yaḥyā ibn Maˋīn, al-Bukhārī, Abū Dāwūd, and others. And he narrates this from Isḥāq ibn ˋAbd-il-Lāh al-Qurashī, who was classed as matrūk by Abū Ḥātim ar-Rāzī, Abū Zurˋah ar-Rāzī, ad-Dāraquṭnī, al-Bukhārī, an-Nasā’ī and was severely weakened by others.

  2. Al-Bayhaqī in Dalā’il an-Nubuwwah 2/216, Maˋrifat aṣ-Ṣaḥābah by Abū Nuˋaym, (5/287-288), and in summary by al-Ḥākim in Al-Mustadrak ˋalaṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn #6977 with an isnād by way of Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḥunaynī, who was weakened by al-Bukhārī and an-Nasā’ī.

And Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrates this from Usāmah ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, who was weakened by Abū Ḥātim ar-Rāzī, Yaḥyā ibn Maˋīn, Ibn Ḥibbān, Abū Dāwūd, and classed as munkar by Aḥmed ibn Ḥambal.

  1. Ad-Dāraquṭnī in his Sunan #435, Al-Ḥākim in Al-Mustadrak ˋalaṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn #6976, al-Bayhaqī in Dalā’il an-Nubuwwah (2/219), and Ibn ˋAsākir (44/34-35) with an isnād to Anas ibn Mālik by way of al-Qāsim ibn ˋUthmān, Abūl-ˋAlā’ al-Baṣrī, who was weakened by al-Bukhārī and ad-Dāraquṭnī.

Following the narration of al-Ḥākim, Aṫh-Ṫhahabī (رحمه الله) said: هذه القصة منكرة جدا – “This story is extremely atrocious.”

  1. Ibn Hishām in As-Sīrah an-Nawabiyyah (1/431-435) by way of Ibn Isḥāq in balāgh form without an isnād.

  2. Aṭ-Ṭabarānī in Al-Muˋjam al-Kabīr #1428 with an isnād to Thawbān (رضي الله عنه), but in the isnād is Zayd ibn Rabīˋah, who was weakened by Abū Ḥātim ar-Rāzī, and al-Bukhārī, classed as matrūk by an-Nasā’ī.

As for the narrations of concealing behind the veil of the Kaˋbah and listening to the recitation of the Qur’ān by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) before embracing Islām, then it was narrated by:

  1. Ibn Abī Shaybah in his Muṣannaf (8/342), and Abū Nuˋaym in Ḥilyat al-Awliyā’ (1/39-40) and Ibn ˋAsākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (44/29) both by way of Ibn Abī Shaybah with an isnād to Jābir ibn ˋAbd-il-Lāh. But the isnād contains Yaḥyā ibn Yaˋlā al-Aslamī who was weakened by Abū Ḥātim ar-Rāzī, Aḥmed ibn Ḥambal, Yaḥyā ibn Maˋīn, al-Bukhārī, and others.

And Yaḥyā ibn Yaˋlā narrates this from ˋAbd-ul-Lāh ibn al-Mu’ammal, who was weakened by Aḥmed ibn Ḥambal, ad-Dāraquṭnī, Abū Dāwūd, an-Nasā’ī, and others.

  1. Ibn Hishām (As-Sīrah an-Nawabiyyah 1/435-437) by way of Ibn Isḥāq from ˋAbd-ul-Lāh ibn Abī Najīḥ al-Makkī, who is thiqah and from the men of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, who narrates this from ˋAtā’ and Mujāhid who did not meet ˋUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه).

  2. Musnad Aḥmed #107 with a ṣaḥīḥ isnād to Shurayḥ ibn ˋUbayd from ˋUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه), but this is mursal as Shurayḥ ibn ˋUbayd never heard from ˋUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه).

As for the narration of the Quraysh gathering and seeing who would enter upon Muḥammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and kill him, and ˋUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb volunteering to do so, then it was narrated by Ibn ˋAsākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (44/35) with an isnād to ˋAbd-ul-Lāh ibn ˋUmar (رضي الله عنهما), but the chain contains Abūl-Husayn ibn Isḥāq ibn Nīkhāb, Abūl-ˋAbbās ˋAbd-ul-Lāh ibn ˋAbd-ul-Lāh al-Bukhārī, and ˋUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥussayn – all three of whom are unknown.

So the fact that there are three different accounts given for the Islām of ˋUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه), and none of which are authentic, only goes to strengthen the position that there is nothing confirmed or maḥfūṭh concerning it. The stronger of the weak accounts, however, are the narrations of listening to the Qur’ān from behind the veil of the Kaˋbah. Two of the asānīd come by way of acceptable narrators, though they are mursal narrations, which weakens them overall.
