As-salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
Firstly, I'm not sure if this was the right subreddit to ask this, but I know there are some Texans here so, might as well try. I have a bit of a situation that I did not wish to post for fear of offending others, but my curiosity is killing me so here it is. Please forgive me and my ignorance in advance.
For a bit of context:
My cousins recently traveled to Dallas, Texas on vacation. They had amazing zabiha halal food, and there were Masjids littered around the area (including the epic EPIC Masjid lol). The muslim population there seems to be thriving Alhamdulillah.
They're now thinking about moving to Texas (we're currently in SoCal) because they feel like the Muslim community is much more pronounced. They feel that it's going to be better for the kids as well, because our smaller community here is more westernized than it is Islamic. Bring the kiddos to the deen, you know. Plus the cost of living is apparently a lot lower so, yay.
Now here's the problem:
A different relative of mine had a polar opposite experience when she and her family moved to Houston. The residents (mainly White from what I can recall) did not like them. She received death threats and other horrible remarks. Out of fear, they decided that it would be best to come back to CA. She also claimed muslim ethnic groups were not very open and tend to stay in their own circles, so it was hard to socialize sometimes. Now it could just be her experience and the fact that it was a different city altogether, but it was all very saddening to hear and it sort of scares me too.
To be truly honest, I would love to come to Texas and enjoy the company of other Muslims and learn more about Islam.
TL;DR:
So what I am trying to ask here mainly is for your personal experience living as a Muslim in Texas. Have you dealt with any kind of islamophobic/racial comments from others? Is it more conservative and less open to newcomers? I've heard that Texans don't really like Californians since we're a bit on the liberal side.
I just don't know what to say to my family to convince them to move at this point. Even just perks about daily life would be nice to hear too, I'd really appreciate it. Any advice at all would be helpful. JazakAllah khair.
