Assalamualaikum,
In the US, and perhaps other places, some masajid are often closed in between prayers. This may be primarily due to security reasons. However, with this brings a challenge that people are not able to complete their prayers in the comfort of the masjid. This is especially challenging for people who rely on a place to pray while in public, as well as travelers looking for a comfortable place to pray. I have seen people cope with this by praying in the parking lot, using a spicket for wudu, and other similar approaches, mashaAllah.
One idea is to design and put into place small outdoor, weatherproof prayer spaces that can reside in the parking lot or outdoor space of a locked masjid. A place that is covered from the elements and offers a comfortable and clean place to make wudu and pray.
I am thinking that, if others are interested, we can develop some designs as an open source project and share them with masajid to adopt, inshaAllah. Nonetheless, it could be a fun design project.
Please leave a comment or send a PM if you are interested in this and we can take our discussion to a private chat, inshaAllah.
Designs can also be useful for public spaces such as parks, as well as for event venues which do not have a designated prayer space, inshaAllah.
Below are some initial considerations that come to mind:
- Clean, comfortable wudu and prayer space
- Comfort from the elements
- A place that would be comfortable for people to use in public (perhaps not very enclosed or tight)
- Privacy available for sisters making wudu
- Easy to clean and maintain
- Cost effective
- Easy to connect water; as well as consider drainage
- Portable*
- Lockable*
Thank you!
p.s., if anyone has seen something like this or can describe innovative ways that masajid have dealt with this, that will be useful, inshaAllah!
