Trust That Allah Knows Better in Surah Al-Ahzab

Just a few weeks ago, there was a viral video released on Youtube called “The Egg - A Short Story” from Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell. It struck me because usually, this was a channel known to bring credible information on various fields from biology to sociology to astronomy. All of a sudden, they were giving us their two cents on the creation of the universe and where we stand in relation to God, in the form of fictional storytelling. It was a very subtle shift, yet dangerous if one isn’t too careful.

Yes, this was fictional work, but one can’t deny the power of what these ideas can have on an individual’s thoughts, as we naturally yearn for answers in regards to our soul and the secrets of our life. This post brings some of my thoughts on this.

In an age where anyone's outlooks and attitudes can tap the horizons through modern communication, we find ourselves being pulled left and right. Whether it’s differing viewpoints on how to find peace and happiness, or how to envision life's purpose. These may be simple concepts to people that they consider to be open-ended and open to interpretation, while the fact of the matter is the truths behind them are grand and solid.

And it is not befitting of us Muslims to waver between the opinions of man and the Creator of man when it comes to matters pertaining to our life and soul.

Keep in mind, I am not speaking on the objective sciences, but rather on claims that stand on baseless conjectures that are somehow meant to enrich your life and spiritual experiences. There is no harm in learning and benefiting from research in fields that are within the human science domain. It’s when we start to project our limited knowledge to the mechanisms of the unseen that our beliefs start falling to the mercy of mere men’s thoughts and fancies.

This implies the need for us to be alert with what we receive, and to be able to align information relating to our spiritual nature against what we already know of the truth. The Quran eloquently places an assurance for us that resolves this particular dilemma and intellectual tug of war through the affirmation of Allah’s names, let’s take a look:

Surah Al-Ahzab(33): Verse 1

Our Prophet (s) is ordered here to fear Allah and not obey the disbelievers nor the hypocrites in their ideas and projections they push forward in terms of lifestyles, perspectives, and conjectures. What I found extremely profound was how Allah ended this command by emphasizing the fact that, "Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise".

It’s a matter of perspective that we are asked to take a look into here. When people who don't share our faith by any means, give you statements on how to be a moral individual or find fulfillment in your life, it is important to be critical. We can surely consider his or her claims as long as we backtrack it to the greater knowledge and wisdom of Allah. The knowledge and wisdom that is bestowed upon us in regard to these same spiritual issues. If all mankind gathered to issue a manual for a better moral path to seemingly get rid of our soul’s ailments and diseases then would you trust that recipe or the recipe of the One that created man in the first place?

How then can we trust one individual with matters that none of can us perceive?

No matter how expansive knowledge becomes in all fields known to man, which are admittedly overwhelming, one must not lose focus on one fact. The fact that it is still nothing compared to Allah's infinite wisdom and knowledge for our spiritual wellbeing and moral order. It's a matter of necessary trust, and only then we can be reassured that yes, Allah knows better, for both my present and my future. Having said that, there is no issue in seeing their perspectives, in fact, it might even enrich our understanding of our own stance. It’s just critical to know where you stand first before we allow full exposure to outside paradigms of thought.

Not taking this advice to heart, is how we can all fall into foreign beliefs that have nothing to with Islam in the first place. Whether it’s believing in reincarnation, thinking that we all have the same soul, or that heaven and hell are mere metaphors of an eternal state of feeling. I will not claim that our lack of education is to be primarily be blamed for this, but it also begins with our own trust. We must trust again.

Beginning to wholly trust in the source of true of all knowledge and wisdom, Allah, and thereby learning it to withstand those that don’t have that trust. Distinguishing right from wrong, our beliefs on life and death, and the lifestyles we choose to propagate must be coded by principles of truth not what men with mere credentials claim to be true.

For, indeed when it comes between a gripping video having tens of millions of views and Allah, it is still Allah that knows better.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
