We all seem to understand the concept that the Quran was sent down for all of mankind. This means that every verse should be of benefit to us in a way or another. Even if it seems to be addressed to an entirely different audience than the one you belong to. If we begin to see this clearly, we would grasp new perspectives that will make the learning of the Quran much more beneficial. When Allah addresses our Prophets or their enemies, it's relevant to us. We can find benefit in all addresses. Whether Allah talks to Musa (a.s.), a group of believers at a certain period in time, the people of the Book, or even those that seemingly have disbelieved in the message. It’s relevant. Here in Surah Al-Mu’menoon, Allah has made a rundown of arguments for the credibility of the Messenger (s.a.w.), and by the very end of the passage, He ordered the Prophet (s.a.w.) to ask the disbelievers a series of questions. These questions were meant to create a moment of introspection within themselves about the realities of the universe that we live in. The first question goes as follows: Surah Al-Mu'menoon(23): Verse 84 Allah begins questioning their views on who possesses ownership of the Earth as well as its inhabitants. The question was posed in order to for the disbelievers take a step back and reflect on the big picture and detach any prejudice they might have had in regards to their idols and deities. Surah Al-Mu'menoon(23): Verse 85 “They will say”, in the way it is worded, indicates that in a short time they would indeed say: It is truly Allah that owns all. It’s remarkable to see that Allah is showing that it doesn’t take all that much to really grasp this truth. Even for people that apparently don’t profess faith. After all, who is more qualified to own the Earth and those in it, besides the one who created all of them in the first place? Allah says then why can’t you take heed of the reminder if you acknowledge this. Now, as a Muslim reading this, one might think this is not directed at believers. This is not new information, I know this. However, I’d argue that despite our claim of believing in One God and all that it entails, we could always strengthen our convictions. Polish our faith once again. Reading this made me ask myself, “Wait, do I really know this as well?”. Imagine how much stress and worry we can put aside when we realize that those seemingly hurt us, ultimately have no control over themselves. Likewise, we have control over no one, even those that we love so much. To Allah belongs all. But wait, it doesn’t end here. Allah intends to expand your horizons: Surah Al-Mu'menoon(23): Verse 86 We talked about the ownership of Earth, but what about the ownership of seven heavens and the Great Throne? Allah doesn’t even ask about their owner here, instead, he questions the identity of their Rabb (Lord). Who is that would be taking care of these heavens, nourishing them, and sustaining their very existence along with those who reside therein? Keep in mind that all you ever knew is the first heaven, that being the universe we live in, and even that we don’t fully comprehend. Who can take such a task upon himself? Surah Al-Mu'menoon(23): Verse 87 And once again they will say: Allah. Following this, Allah asks then why is it that there is no fear present amongst you when you claim to know these heavy realities within yourselves. It is incredible power demonstrated here. Beyond simple ownership, Allah is actively attending to the needs of these heavens constantly at every second. Heavens on a scale that we can’t even perceive. As the Prophetic teaching tells us, our first heaven alone compared to the second heaven, is like a ring in a desert. And so we can probably better appreciate the term every time we say: Allah, Lord of The Worlds. اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَHow can we doubt that Allah will not be able to straighten our affairs in the best form when this is the kind of business He is dealing with? As believers, rest assured, we are in very capable hands. And this is not even the end of it; Allah broadens your perspective even further: Surah Al-Mu'menoon(23): Verse 88 Whose Hand is the Malakoot? (مَلَكُوتُ) You might be thinking how will the seven heavens be topped in this next question. The answer lies in the Arabic term of Malakoot. You see, Malakoot actually means the sovereignty of all things, both the tangible and the intangible. Allah has gone beyond the boundary of the seen world here, asking beyond what is material. In Whose Hand are your fears, your anxieties, and our innermost ambitions, secrets, and desires? Allah forces you to take a look deeper into the worlds within you, as opposed to just the worlds around us. And so who is the one who has the dominion of these entities, and is the one who would protect all things, and whom that no one can take a protector against? Surah Al-Mu'menoon(23): Verse 89 The disbelievers would still acknowledge that it couldn’t be other than Allah who can be capable of such things. Allah asks then what can possibly delude you from the truth if this is what you know from within your very souls. Allah has manifested the most essential aspects of all existence in three questions: The ownership of the Earth and those in it, the caretaking of what’s here, and the unseen worlds beyond, and the sovereignty of all things in the physical and the non-physical. Take time to recognize what power and mighty control your Creator has. It is enough. May Allah make us of those that answer these questions saying, “It is Allah” not just with our tongues, but also with our hearts. سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ{Disclaimer: This is not a Tafsir but a reflection on the established meanings of the verses amongst our scholars}. Youtube Channel: somemuslimkid Twitter: somemuslimkid TLDR: Allah speaks to different audiences throughout the Quran, and for each address, there will always be a benefit for us to take home. Here Allah, asked the disbelievers a series of questions through His Messenger (s.a.w), in order to pose for them the clear realities of His dominion, and control. We as believers should seize this opportunity to ask ourselves the same questions for the sake of renewing our faith and to ultimately recognize the grand power that lies with the God we enslaved ourselves to worship.
