I wrote this as a comment on other thread but now I'm curious how others would respond to it.
What do you think we should do towards interpretation that we don't personally agree but has actual basis in traditional/classical tafseers of Islam?
Should we tolerate it as part of differences in opinion (ikhtilaf/khilafiyya) and thus acknowledge that such interpretation is indeed part of Islam?
Or should we actively suppress it, not allow it to spread and deny that interpretation as part of Islam?
What would you do? What should we do?
Below is my original comment to illustrate what do I mean by "bad".
If non-muslims comment that Islam is a violent and non-tolerant religion because in Islam apostasy and homosexual act is punishable by death.
Would you consider such remark as "false comment" or "ignorant comment" on Islam?
Because it's a fact that certain interpretation of Islam indeed rule apostasy and homosexual act with death, and Islam itself allows khilafiyya in fiqh, which means difference of opinion in this matter does not cause them to be out of fold of Islam.
Muslim A doesn't agree that apostasy/homosexual act is punishable by death, with his reasoning coming from Quran, hadiths, tafseers and scholars' opinion.
Muslim B agree that apostasy/homosexual act is punishable by death, with his reasoning also coming from Quran, hadiths, tafseers and scholars' opinion.
Both are muslims, and treat each other as muslims as well.
People X outside Islam see this and conclude that death for apostasy/homosexual act is indeed a part of Islam, and then made the comment that Islam is violent and non-tolerant.
Muslim A call people X an ignorant and an islamophobe for making such remarks, but in reality muslim A tolerate the interpretation of muslim B regarding death for apostasy/homosexual act as part of ikhtilaf/khilafiyya within Islam.
Isn't the right thing to do here is to acknowledge people X that their criticism is true, and muslim A should confront muslim B regarding their violent interpretation?
When Islam is being criticised, we spend a lot of effort explaining our own interpretation of Islam to non-muslims to show how their criticism is unwarranted, but many of us is not even aware or intentionally ignore the fact that there are other interpretation of Islam that exists and rightly warrant such criticism.
What do you think we should do?
