I’m a Southern California native so earthquakes are nothing new to me, but let’s face it- if you’re in the middle of the prayer hall, there isn’t exactly anywhere to duck and cover under. The earthquake hit during the communal prayer right as we were in sujood. It actually felt like one of the more serene moments in my life surrounded by everyone in prostration, quietly murmuring Allahu Akbar during the shaking. I did pray that if it were to get worse and the building came down, I thanked Allah for a good life. Mashallah it didn’t get worse and we were safe. But it was a friendly reminder that I can only hope I’m mindful of Allah when my last moment in this world comes.
