This is a phrase that’s always been used in my entire family for a long time. I’ve never thought about it before in depth, but I want to know more about this phrase that gets used so much. Is it in the Quran or Sunnah anywhere? What context should it be used and not be used?
What prompted this question was a recent event when we were driving and saw a new building that looked like a mosque, and everyone started saying Mashalla look a new mosque in this community. I remembed that it actually wasn’t a mosque and was a gurudwara instead, so I said something like before saying mashalla check if it’s even a mosque and not a non-Islamic temple. Then one of the people in the car started arguing that we can say mashalla even if it was a gurudwara since it’s still a place of worship.
This confused me, since isnt mashalla meaning god has willed it, so it shouldn’t be used in all contexts like I was being told.
Sorry, this is probably a stupid thing, it just confused me in the types of words we should be using in the types of situations. Opinions?
