I’m a fairly new parent of two toddlers and the more I read books on how to raise children the islamic way, the more mixed feelings I have towards my own parents. I know we are told not to disrespect our elders, but they never gave us the opportunity to express ourselves. I try my best to not only be a good parent but to raise children in a positive way and not authoritative, so they can be themselves and be able to speak-up when necessary. We were always told to be obedient and modest but never to question our parents. I thought I had a fairly good childhood but after having children suppressed feelings opened old wounds and some of the abuse I experienced feels like they have some fault in it, how can I overcome this and forgive them?
