I’m currently in my first year of Mechanical Engineering, but I’ve realised that I may want to pursue a different career path. Initially, I chose engineering because it seemed like the most obvious option. I’ve always been passionate about comics, particularly characters like Iron Man, and I consider myself a creative person who enjoys innovation, problem-solving and the idea of making a meaningful impact on the world. However, I’ve come to realise that mechanical engineering isn’t what I expected it to be, and I’m not enjoying the course as much as I had hoped.
I’m now considering switching to either Medicine or Law. Medicine appeals to me because it involves problem-solving and making a direct difference in people’s lives. However, my main concern is the length of the training, as I’m reluctant to commit to six or more years of study.
Law, on the other hand, is something I’ve been interested in for a long time, particularly through watching real court trials and legal television programmes. However, as a Muslim, I have concerns about whether pursuing a career as a lawyer would be permissible under Islamic law.
Before making such a significant decision and potentially switching courses, I would like to understand the Islamic ruling on practising law, including whether it is permissible to work as a lawyer within the UK legal system and whether certain areas of legal practice may be more compatible with Islamic principles than others. I want to make an informed decision that aligns with both my career aspirations and my religious beliefs.
