Hazrat Abu Hurairah (raa) relates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said:
"A needy and poor person is not one who can be turned back with a date or two or a morsel or two: the real poor person is one who, despite his poverty, abstains from asking."
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Another version by these two narrators is:
"A poor person is not one who goes round abegging and who can be be turned away with a morsel or two or a date or two. A truly poor person is one who does not accumulate enough to suffice him, and does not disclose his poverty so that he might be given alms, and does not stand up go beg."
(Riyadh us saleheen number 264)
