So I currently work as an education specialist for a refugee resettlement agency in the United States.

Yesterday I met with some teachers at a local high school and they said that their Afghan students are refusing to work with anyone from the opposite gender, citing religion and culture. While I am not muslim, I have worked extensively with muslim students in the past, including with Afghan students but I have never experienced this much pushback and outright refusal to listen to the teachers' suggestions. We want to respect their culture, but at the same time, we feel like it's seriously going to limit these students' future opportunities and hinder their ability to integrate into the wider community.

So I was wondering if anybody had any advice or perspectives on how to push these students to interact with the opposite gender, while also balancing out their religious concerns?
