In todays day and age, especially in the Western countries, nearly everyone can afford to do the Hajj atleast once in their lifetime. Did an average Muslim, say in the 12th century from the far reaches of the Muslim empire? Historically did all Muslims do the Hajj atleast once in their lifetime?

Hearing stories from my Grandfathers, it was very rare for a young person to ever go to Hajj. It was considered an ardous journey from Pakistan taking several weeks via ship to Saudi Arabia.

In the modern times, alot of Muslims complain about the cost of Hajj yet it seems to be more and more accessible to the common man as opposed to centuries ago. Is there any concrete research on this topic?
