I'm asking for a friend who is in a difficult situation. He's a pretty wealthy guy who invests a lot of money and owns multiple McDonald's franchises, grocery store franchises and some gas stations. We live in a European country, so the majority of the local population is not muslim of course.

He recently asked for the hand of a muslim girl (he's muslim as well), and the girl and her family refuse to give their blessings for their marriage because he "earns haram money". The girl says she doesn't want to be his wife because she doesn't want to live off of his haram income (she has no income herself). Other than that she actually likes my friend a lot, and even adores him for his great personality and good looks. He's also very wealthy, respected and overall a very humble and nice guy. He practises Islam as well, but of course his business is not entirely 'halal'.

What would be the logical way to think about this? Is the girl and her family completely right with the way they look at this? Is completely refusing to allow the marriage the right thing to do (for both the family and the girl), or are there rules that do allow the trade of non-halal products when most people who buy those products are not muslims?

Besides, the businesses he owns are franchises, so he barely has any say in what the businesses sell. McDonald's simply don't use halal meat, and the grocery stores he owns are part of one of the most popular grocery store companies in our country and they sell mostly haram meat (and only some halal products).
