Hello everyone, this is my first post on Reddit here! I am a Muslim, and I wanted to ask you guys a question that's been bugging me recently.
Lately, I've seen a lot of atheists on Reddit who claim that free will is an illusion and a myth made by the Christians. They support a philosophy known as hard determinism, which basically means that they believe that all of our choices are defined by our genetics, our parents, out experiences, our friends, and the society we grow up in. This is true to some extent, especially with psychology. Say, for instance, if a person is born in a country like Japan, they will likely grow up without even knowing much about Islam.
However, I don't think that our surroundings define us entirely. I do believe that when a murderer is about to commit murder, it is their choice, not something that they were "forced" to do by their past.
So, is there anything to support an argument against hard determinism that is both grounded in Islam and from a secular view? I haven't really found any from my brief searches on the internet, and every single time someone asks this and supports free will on other subreddits, they get downvoted.
Thank you in advance!
Bonus question: is there a difference between the Islamic and Christian views of free will?
