Hey guys. I don't mean this to be a debate thread. I'm extremely knowledgeable about Christian belief, but I know very little about Islam. It was just a couple weeks ago I was mixing up 'halal' with 'haram'. Yeah, that was embarrassing. But, I digress.
So, I guess I have a series of questions. You may answer any or all or none of them, as you find convenient.
(1) Why do you believe in the existence of God, prophethood of Muhammad, and inspiration of the Qur'an? For instance, do you think there is strong empirical evidence for these three tenets? Or philosophical arguments? Personal revelation? Something else?
(2) What do you think about the tension between scientific consensus views and Islamic traditional views? I know there are Christians who accept evolution, gradualism, the big bang, etc. But I just don't know how Muslims feel about this.
(3) Has western culture had any influence on your religious beliefs? For instance, in the west, freedom of expression is highly valued, as is freedom of religion. And then there's stuff like separation between church (or mosque) and state.
In addition to answering these questions yourselves, I would be very interested in:
(4) How do you think American Muslims would tend to answer the above three questions? And do you approve/disapprove? Why? Etc.
Thanks in advance.
