BDoJ event held at UK parliament regarding Uighur situation. I was given ticket by my work to attend and was free that day so turned up. There was a Uighur sister and Jewish hosts holding the event.

Now, when it got time for Q&A, a predominantly Jewish turnout, a Pakistani brother asked that although this is about the plight of Uighurs, it is hypocritical to ignore the elephant in the room regarding Palestine. This led to a back and forth by the liberal Jewish hostess and the Rabbi who were both part of the panel, the Rabbi stormed off as they suggested it is crude and lacking awareness to mention Israel-Palestine when the event is about Uighur situation.

I found this interesting and has been on my mind ever since. I am torn between understanding where they are talking about regarding respecting the agenda of the session rather than bringing in that atrocity, as it is helpless to cut off support. But on the other hand, it is a smart and brave question to ask and allows them to truly think about how they can have both have a soft spot for Uighurs while watching the genocide in their own back yard.

So I guess the question is, in your opinion was that an appropriate question to ask or was it futile and caused controversy even though we all know Palestine is an ongoing genocide. I have a feeling mostly all will say the latter so maybe I should rephrase it as would that be a question you would ask if you were at the event? If no, why?

It takes bravery to ask but I’m just tryna understand the line between courage and appropriateness.

Interested to hear you views.
