Light Work III

Danessa Myricks Light Work Volume III Illuminating Eye & Face Pigment Palette ($125.00 for 0.78 oz.) is a new, limited edition eye and face palette that includes a mix of duochromes, multichromes, shimmers, and a pressed glitter (which does contain plastic, or PET, glitter). For those who don’t want to purchase from more indie brands, it would be a nice way to try out multichromes if the overall color story appeals.

The “duochrome gel” finish felt more limited for use on the eye area as it was very, very emollient, so it was quick to settle into fine line and didn’t have much lasting power as an eye product, but they were more workable on the cheeks patted on top of powder, though they still migrated/disappeared faster than most cream-based cheek products do for me. The glitter had some adhesive quality to it, but it would still be a product I’d pair with a much tackier base to minimize fallout/migration.

The multichromes were nice; creamier without being overly emollient, so they still had intense pigmentation but remained blendable, were easy to work with using dry or wet brushes, and had strong shifts. The “holographic powder” finish was smooth, a little emollient, and had more of translucent base (as intended), so they worked well for layering over other products as well as more duochrome-shifting highlighters on the face and eyes but could just as easily be used as higher coverage eyeshadows/highlighters.

Polaris

Polaris seemed to be a more translucent base with finer, multichromatic shimmer that shifted from bluish-aqua to chartreuse to green-gold to warm gold with a more luminous, glossy finish. The consistency was very emollient–oily to me, in a way–and quite thin. I had better luck applying this shade compared to Space Suit, which felt even oilier.

Polaris had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which could be diffused and sheered out if desired. It was better as a highlighter on the brow bone or on the face, but it did not work on the inner tearduct or lid as it was too prone to migrating and getting into fine lines (almost immediately). When I used it as a cheek highlighter, it lasted about six hours.

Galaxy

Galaxy is a black-based multichrome that shifted from navy blue to violet to warm purple to greenish-teal paired with a metallic sheen. The product had full color coverage in a single layer with a smooth, lightly creamy consistency that wasn’t too firmly nor too loosely-pressed into the pan. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Ingredients

Silicon Dioxide, Petrolatum, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499)

Martian

Martian is a gray-based multichrome that shifted from lavender to purple to warmer plum to green paired with a metallic sheen. The texture was a little thinner and more finely-milled compared to the other multichromes in the palette, but it had opaque color payoff that adhered evenly to bare skin and diffused well along the edges while retaining its noticeable shift. The product lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

  • Terra Moons M51 (P, $17.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar).

Ingredients

Silicon Dioxide, Petrolatum, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499)

Sol

Sol is a darker, rich gold with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The texture was denser and noticeably thicker compared to most shades in the palette, so a heavier hand and denser, tighter-packed brush was best for picking up product evenly, or else a fingertip.

had opaque pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin and the thicker, creamier nature of the formula helped the sparkles adhere and stay on well. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing on me.

Mica, Petrolatum, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Tin Oxide, Tocopheryl Acetate, May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Iron Oxides (Ci 77491)

Orion

Orion is chocked full of cyan, mid-depth blue, and green fine glitter particles suspended in a clear base. While it was touted as “mess-free,” it did have fallout/migration over time. It had a lot of “pigmentation” and distributed fairly evenly without too much manipulation, and there was light tackiness that helped the glitter particles adhere to skin.

I just found that the base was not tacky enough to ensure real longevity compared to a standalone glitter glue/adhesive, as there were particles that had migrated after four hours and that worsened over time. This shade does include plastic, or PET, glitter, which is not intended for the eye area.

Ingredients

Polybutene Terephthalate, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Diisostearyl Malate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Polyisobutene, Cera Microcristallina/ Microcrystalline Wax, Paraffin, Acrylates Copolymer, Glycol Montanate, Synthetic Wax, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aluminum, Blue 1 Lake (42090), Yellow 5 Lake (19140)

NOTICE: All products categorized under "Glitter" contain Polyethylene Terephthalate, also known as plastic or PET glitter, and it is typically cosmetic grade glitter. Inclusion of this ingredient sometimes carries a warning (in the US) that the product is "not intended for use in the immediate eye area." This ingredient has not been approved for usage on the eyes per the FDA. In recent years, some brands are including this product in their eyeshadows without any warning or callout and effectively marketing them as eyeshadows or including a symbol of an "eye" which suggests eye usage. Via CosIng for EU, PET glitter is permitted without any restrictions or limitations. For an in-depth look at whether cosmetic grade glitter is safe, please view this post.

Golden Eclipse

Golden Eclipse has a translucent base–as marketed–with shimmer and pearl that shifted from champagne gold to peachy gold with flecks of gold and lavender micro-sparkle. The texture was soft, smooth, and blendable without being too loosely-pressed into the pan, and I found it sat particularly well on bare skin as it had a real sheen to it that wasn’t prone to migrating.

It had more opaque coverage from the shimmer/sparkle but the translucent base was also present, which was as marketed, so it could be sheered out quite a bit, too. This shade lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before fading visibly.

Ingredients

Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Diisostearyl Malate, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Magnesium Myristate, Polyethylene, Ethylhexylglycerin, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)

Strawberry Moon

Strawberry Moon has a translucent base with iridescent shimmer and sparkle that danced between lavender and cooler pink with a shiny, sparkly finish. This shade had larger shimmer/sparkle particles compared to the other three “holographic powders,” so it delivered a stronger sheen and more visible sparkle on skin when applied and buffed out.

It had opaque pigmentation from the shimmer/sparkle, but because the base was translucent (as marketed), it could be sheered out readily and have one’s skin tone come through. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Ingredients

Phenyl Trimethicone, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Mica, Silicon Dioxide, Petrolatum, Polyethylene, Busmuth Oxychloride, Magnesium Myristate, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Methicone, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)

Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox has a translucent base with multidimensional shimmer that shifted from minty green to warmer greenish-gold. It had opaque color payoff from all the shimmer but the base itself had a translucency to it, so once blended out, one’s skin tone would come through.

The texture was soft, smooth, and blendable without being too firmly nor too loosely-pressed into the pan. The product wore well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Ingredients

Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Diisostearyl Malate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Magnesium Myristate, Polyethylene, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)

Blue Moon

Blue Moon has a translucent base with multidimensional shimmer and pearl that shifted from blue-to-green and had a shiny, reflective finish that read smooth and almost wet when applied and blended out on skin. The consistency was soft, smooth, and lightly emollient in a way that was almost cream-like, as it was thin, but it applied like a powder and diffused well on bare skin.

It had more opaque coverage, but the base itself was translucent (as marketed), so it could sheer out quite a bit if desired. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Ingredients

Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Mica, Petrolatum, Polyethylene, Bismuth Oxychloride, Magnesium Myristate, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Methicone, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)

Space Suit

Space Suit seemed to have a transparent base with finely-milled pearl that shifted from deeper bronze to gold to richer, more molten gold and had a soft, luminous sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff in a single layer, but it was difficult to work with at a high opacity level due to the very emollient, almost oily, quality of the texture, so it tended to smear around rather than build up or diffuse evenly.

I was able to pat it on with a stippling brush as a cheek highlighter and get a decent application (and about six hours of wear before it had slid around), but it was underwhelming as an eye product and had almost no staying power.

Ingredients

Silicon Dioxide, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Isononyl Isononanoate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Polyisobutene, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Cera Microcristallina/ Microcrystalline Wax, Paraffin, Polyethylene, Glycol Montanate, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Synthetic Wax, Tocopheryl Acetate, May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77491)

Aurora

Aurora is a black-based multichrome that shifted from forest green to warmer, olive green to purple to copper (at the most extreme end) and had a metallic sheen. It had a shinier finish with finer shimmer particles, so it was very smooth and flattering on skin. It had opaque color coverage with a lightly creamy, moderately dense feel in the pan.

The shifts were noticeable without having to contort to find the different shifts, and the black base did not seem quite as intense as I’ve seen for this shift so it was a little more forgiving if you over-blended. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing faintly on me.

Ingredients

Silicon Dioxide, Petrolatum, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499)

Gaia

Gaia is a black-based multichome that shifted from rich, olive green to greenish-gold to forest green to greenish-teal paired with a smooth, metallic sheen. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented where a little went a long way, while the consistency was smooth, lightly creamy, and blendable without being difficult to pick up using a dry brush. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before showing signs of wear.

Ingredients

Silicon Dioxide, Petrolatum, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499)

Solar Rain

Solar Rain is a gray-based multichrome that shifted from soft yellow to peachy yellow to darker, peachy orange paired with a soft, metallic sheen. Of the multichromes in the palette, this was the weakest in shift as it didn’t have as much contrast between the different color shifts.

The texture was thinner, more emollient but still yielded opaque coverage that was easy to work with on bare skin. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Ingredients

Silicon Dioxide, Petrolatum, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), May Contain/ Peut Contenir (+/-): Iron Oxides (Ci 77491), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499)

Black Hole

Black Hole is a deep black with neutral-to-warm undertones and a satin finish. It had an almost cream-like texture, as it was emollient, almost moveable in the pan, but it was still more like a very dense powder with extra slip than a cream-powder hybrid by touch — with respect to performance, though, it “melted” and sat more like a cream eyeshadow.

It did take a heavier handed approach and a denser brush (like a stubby pencil brush) to pick up product evenly. It had opaque color coverage that wore nicely for eight and a half hours on me.

Ingredients

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Mica, Phenyl Trimethicone, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Diisostearyl Malate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Magnesium Myristate, Nylon-12, Boron Nitride, Polyisobutene, Ethylhexylglycerin, Methicone, Phenoxyethanol, Polyethylene, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Iron Oxides (Ci 77499), Carbon Black (Ci 77266) (Nano)
