Assalamualaikum,

In the Sunan Abu-Dawud 3674, narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed.

This is followed by Sunan Abu-Dawud 3675, where Anas b. Malik said :

Abu Talhah asked the prophet (ﷺ) about the orphans who had inherited wine. He replied: Pour it out. He asked: May I not make vinegar of it? He replied: No.

It is my understanding from these two hadiths that the production of vinegar (halal) from an alcoholic source like wine (haram) is considered haram, and this seems to apply to those who purchase, sell, etc. the said alcohol for the production. Yet I find online references stating that vinegar made from alcoholic drinks like red wine is considered halal, which contradicts the hadiths stated above.

That being said, does this mean vinegar made only from pure alcohol such as ethyl alcohol (not sourced from any alcoholic drink) is considered halal? Does such a thing exist? What about the current production of vinegar itself? Is it halal, or is it because of its production method, it is actually haram?

The two hadiths above were sourced from sunnah.com for reference purposes only. Thank you for your time and feedback.

From one humble servant of Allah to another, seeking knowledge and clarification.
