One thing that I’m grateful for in Islam is teaching me to laugh about life.
Islam was back in the news, and I realized I didn’t know much about it. I decided I had a free weekend, so I decided to attend a masjid.
I attended a small masjid. Almost everyone there was from a particular ethnicity, and I didn’t know much of what I was doing. I told them I was new and just learning, and they just smiled and kept repeating, “In a minute. Wudu?”
I just followed those around me and lined up with the men. When the prayer ended, all of a sudden, all these little kids were running around the place handing out Styrofoam packages that had meals in them.
I didn’t know if I was holding the Styrofoam package, supposed to eat the food inside, give it out to the homeless as a form of outreach, do I need to wash my hands in some form of ritual before eating, return it to the child, do I eat as a community or alone, etc. then to add to the confusion, some other guy was going by with a big box collecting cash. I didn’t know if this was to pay for the meal or not. It was so confusing.
The food was good!
My first visit to the mosque was such a different experience for me. I felt so lost and confused; I didn’t return to another opportunity that presented itself for me to study Islam again.
