Salaam,

Over the last two decades, Muslim organizations have matured in North America, creating diverse boards, engaging in community outreach and social justice, etc. At the same time, many other religious communities have news outlets that report critically on community happenings (Jews have the Jewish Daily Forward and Tablet Magazine, for example, and dozens of local magazines), whereas the Muslim community - to my knowledge - mostly has bloggy/think-piece types of sites. Or news sources that are indebted to these big Muslim institutional forces, rather than reporting on them. To my knowledge, there are not really any independent news outlets that cover pressing internal issues that would be able to cover issues including abuses of power, misuse of funds, diversity, and so on. These sorts of issues take serious reporting - not just scanning Twitter for a quick-hit blog write-up. This seems necessary for holding the Muslim community accountable and, in so doing, helping it to grow and flourish. (Sorry for my North America focus here - this is the context I'm aware of.)

I'm an editor and a journalist, so the idea is in the back of my mind - I just don't have the time yet, as I know it would take a huge time investment without any funding just yet. (Maybe there's someone out there who's interested in collaborating?)

So anyway, my questions for you:

-Are there good outlets I'm unaware of?

-Why doesn't one already exist? (If I'm right in thinking it doesn't)

-Would you read such an outlet? Do you think we need one?

-What would you want to see in a Muslim news outlet?
