When speaking to someone about marriage, is it advised / permissible to speak to that person's former wife/husband about them?

I was looking online for answers from some sites, or a video or other from a teacher. If a person is talking to a prospective spouse, do they have a right and/or is it advisable in general to speak to the ex-wife or ex-husband?
