The Burqa has been a symbol of oppression and has been weaponized by the West to continue to feed the narrative that Muslim woman, Afghan women in particular are oppressed. (Using Afghanistan due to current situation in Afghanistan)
If we look at the refugees who were fleeing, take a look at the women & what they were wearing. Majority of women were wearing MODEST clothes. Did they wear necessarily the burqa? - No. Were they running from sharia law or Islam, or their cultural practices? No. They were escaping violence & war which they have endured for the last forty years.
But sure let’s pin it all completely on Islam.
This isn’t something new. Let’s go back to 2001 when Oprah removed a burqa from a Muslim woman. Western media LOVES to paint this image of Muslim women being oppressed and the burqa has become their token symbol of oppression.
Not only as a Muslim, a woman, but also as an Afghan I can not stand when Afghans or Muslim women are made to be voiceless and oppressed that need white saviours or “western help”. White Feminism is a disease and only serves to help white women.
Our women have been exploited by Western media for far too long. And when will this end? This white-saviour complex that also contributed to the invasion of Afghanistan.
We all know the tricks and tools of the media and how it can be used to support the war in Afghanistan. They wanted to give us “freedom” and save us from “sharia law”. Who are they really saving? Who are they really freeing? When the United States funded the Taliban.
“Since 9/11 and the inception of the U.S. invasion, American women have rallied to 'save the Afghan women and children' in a paternalistic attempt to legitimize the war in Afghanistan under the guise of feminism and care. It was a perfect emotional ploy devised to tug on the hearts of Americans, a flawless execution of branding, and a way to get people on board with the war regardless of political affiliation.”
We need to amplify Afghan VOICES and Muslim voices and change this narrative.
There is no denying there are issues in regards to the treatment of women in Afghan culture and yes people do exploit Islam and twist it to abuse & oppress women. That is NOT okay in Islam and is NOT tolerated. We need to do better for our women and our communities. There is no compulsion in Islam and zero tolerance for abuse of any kind.
