I have a question that I have never been able to find a solid answer for. I converted about 6 months ago and am 32 y/o, have lived in the US my whole life. I took my shahada 2 weeks before Ramadan and after 3 and a half days of fasts I couldn’t physically do it anymore or move at work. It was just impossible for me physically but I have no health issues or anything. My body, or Iman, was not ready for 30 days of it. I am a postdoc that works in a lab so cannot afford to not have my faculties.
The shaikh I took shahada with told me I need only make up the days I missed (which were 20). I now have only 10 left Alhamdulillah. However, as I am not sick or elderly, I recently read that I have to pay Kaffara which seems a little crazy to me given I just couldn’t do it anymore this past year. I believe I now know how to do it and am conditioned properly, and have the Iman to do it this next year. So am I supposed to now fast for 1,200 days straight or feed 1,200 people, or free 20 slaves? I don’t understand and find it very frustrating that all texts say I must do this.
