As salaamu alaykum brothers and sisters. I’ve (Male) just started a job on a graduate scheme at a large engineering company in the UK alhamdulillah. The job itself is good so far and I’m thankful to have it. However I feel very isolated as around 98% of people in the office are non-Muslims. Pretty much everyone in my team is a non-Muslim and I find it incredibly hard to socialise with these people whether it be during lunch or small breaks during the day. When it comes to work related things there are absolutely no problems as I find it easy to communicate with people. But during times of socialising the topics that arise are of no interest to me (drinking, random things etc). Around 30-40% of my team are females and so I feel even more uncomfortable in these situations. As a consequence I tend to find myself alone quite a lot of the time and this is unpleasant as a new graduate starting at a large company. I have no problems with focusing on my work and doing my job and then going home, but I do feel isolated at moments in the day which I’m embarrassed to say makes me feel slightly upset. It is also hard to give reasons to people as to why I don’t join them in their socialising without offending them.

Any advice from anyone would be appreciated, especially from people who have been in similar situations.
