how come the man who killed 99 people go to heaven?

I understand he repented and allah forgave him. Its an amazing hadith but yeah. like ie you have people these days in prison for murder and rape and pedophilia. could they also repent and genuinely repent and go to heaven by changing their ways like him? I find that hard to believe.
