I'm from Pakistan and here anyone with syed as their surname gets unconditional respect and is also considered superior to other Muslims.
The reason I use the word "superior" is because many Muslims in Pakistan do not employ Syeds as maids, servants, cleaners etc because they believe that it would be disrespectful to do so. Also many of my Syed friends have said that they try not to marry outside of Syeds and a syed man can marry a non-syed female but a female syed cannot marry a male non-syed.
For me personally, it seems to contradict with the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) last sermon:
"All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action."
