On 14tn August was Pakistani Independence Day. A woman went to a major Pakistani monument created in the memory of independence. She got harassed by a crowd of 400 something men. A lot of them were teenagers. They surrounded her and stripped her, groped her and pushed her around. They made videos of her. Now Pakistani social media is filled with people justifying this. That she was immodest, that she was a tik toker and worked with India.
I‘m extreme disturbed by this. Honestly, all my life Pakistan has been very unsafe for women. Just walking outside is sometimes like walking through a war zone. Groping, stalking, harassment of all kind is so common. Men follow women in cars who they see walking alone. It’s so difficult. But what makes everything worse is how it is implied that the women deserve it because they aren’t following Islam. That they aren’t wearing hijab, or wear lipstick or walked outside without a mahram. Everytime an incident against a woman happens, her character is attacked more than the perpetrators. I really want to know what Islam says? If a woman dresses in a different way does she not deserve protection? What is the punishment for such people?
