Were there other forms of human beings on Earth before/during the time of Prophet Adam (AS)?

I have seen some people using Quran 76:1 to support that there were humans before Adam(AS), and that Prophet Adam (AS) was the first perfect human.

هَلۡ اَتٰى عَلَى الۡاِنۡسَانِ حِيۡنٌ مِّنَ الدَّهۡرِ لَمۡ يَكُنۡ شَيۡـٴً۬ـا مَّذۡكُوۡرًا

Hath there come upon man (ever) any period of time in which he was a thing unremembered? Quran 76:1

I try not to do research like this for my own sake, I do however have a curious mind and want to research this further. I’m not a scholar, and I would hope that any of you who may be more well versed could help me with my confusion.
