Hi everyone, I'm a Christian interested in learning about Islam and I have a few questions about sin (haram?) in Islam! Feel free to pick and choose which questions you'd like to answer :) Any verses you know of that support your views are also appreciated!
- What is the definition of "sin" in Islam? Is it simply "something that God has forbidden" or is there more?
For example in addition to that a Christian might define sin as "things that fall short of God's standards. Sin seperates us from God because sin naturally leads to death (physically, spiritually, and eternally) because it's the opposite of a life giving God." Basically just wondering if Islam has an expanded definition as well
- Are sins inherently bad or are they bad only because God says so?
Asking because I saw that in heaven Muslims expect to be able to do things that are sinful here - like having multiple sex partners or drinking wine. It seems both Christians and Muslims believe there will be no sin in eternity but for Christians, this is because we aren't doing the things that were considered sins here. Because to us sins are inherently evil, not just because God has forbade it if that makes sense. God hates sin so only good will happen on the new earth, not because the definition of good changes we just have no desire to do anything bad. Does God not hate sin in Islam so when you do it in heaven he doesn't mind? Does he only hate certain sins?
- Does every sin have a reason for why it's bad? Or are the reasons for some simply "God says it's bad?"
For example murder is obviously bad because it hurts another person and it's not just. But not listening to certain musical instruments - is the reason it's bad because it affects you negatively spiritually or is it only bad because God forbade it? Not trying to imply God has to give a reason for anything he does btw, just wondering as I'm a bit confused about a couple sins :)
- Can all sins be forgiven? What would cause God to not want to forgive certain sins?
That's all I have for now but I wouldn't be surprised if more come up later lol. Thank you all and God bless!
