Assalamualeikum wa RahmatulAllahi wa Barakatu:

I have a question regarding the local imam in the mesjid.

Fajr Salah in my area comes in at 4:26AM. However, the imam (& the rest of the congregation who seem privy to the imam’s preferred time for offering Fajr) doesn’t arrive until 5:15AM. Sunrise is at 5:55AM. The website for the mesjid lists that the Iqama is offered on time.

I like to pray Fajr on time & then sit in Dhikr of Allah until Sunrise when I then pray 2 + 2 raka’at for the reward of having performed Hajj, inshaAllah.

My question is: Is it permissible for the imam to habitually delay Fajr prayer the way he does? Is it better for me to pray on time, do my Dhikr, etc. Or is it better for me to delay & wait for the congregation? Am I wrong for arriving at the mesjid, waiting, & then proceeding to pray alone because no one is there? Is praying on time in the mesjid & then leaving when I am done doing my Dhikr, etc. even if the congregational prayer occurs while I am there wrong? Should I pray Fajr twice? This is all very troubling as I am trying to be disciplined & sincere in my worship.

Another thing is that the imam allows no time to break fast when Maghrib Adhan comes in (on my phone app) & rushes to do the adhan himself. Then he proceeds to rush through Maghrib so fast I barely have time to recite Al-Fatiha or the Tashahud. In this case, is it better for me to pray alone or speed-pray with the imam because Islam teaches us prayer in congregation (specifically for men) is more rewarding than prayer alone? I find it very upsetting to speed through prayer.

The imam does not observe Dhuhur & Asr prayers in the mesjid & tells the congregation so, so they don’t bother showing up (just Fajr, “sometimes” Maghrib, & Isha.) I was doing Irtikaf for The Day of Arafah, & he was there doing cosmetic work on the mesjid for Eid Al-Adha. So I only have one experience so far praying Asr behind him.

What’s more, is that the imam does Dhikr over a microphone as soon as he Salams out, disrupting me (I cannot speak for the few others present) as I finish my Tashahud & make Dua’a before Salam. It also disrupts my Dhikr as I do a different number than him. During even silent raka’at he utters words into the microphone, disrupting my concentration & Khushoor.

The imam also sometimes has reading circles right after Fajr & insists on everyone joining, telling those who are doing Dhikr to “do it later.” He recites over the microphone, tells everyone to repeat as he also repeats over the microphone, over everyone. It is neither a tajweed nor a tafseer lesson. Is this correct? Am I missing something or is the imam in the wrong for dictating how people choose to go about their daily worship after prayer (Dhikr instead of his reading circle)?

I am new to the mesjid, so perhaps I’m missing the proper etiquette & I am the one in the wrong? Any insight, shared experiences, observations, advice, is much appreciated! May Allah reward you for your thoughtful responses & for your time! JazakAllahu kheiran!
