Hi and salam!

To start, I have been a Muslim for almost a year (practicing for about 4 months, very new), I have been interested in Islam for almost 2 years. I have not done a lot of research on these topics. But when I do, people say different things. I understand that the Quran is very interapatable, but it can still be quite confusing at times.

I would prefer if no one judges me for this. But I have read the Quran and parts of it quite a bit. However, this verse has always bothered me anytime I read it and its making me doubt.

I greatly apologize if this has been talked about before. I did some research prior and people say different things.

4: 34:

"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as God has given some of them an advantage over others, and because they spend out of their wealth. The good women are obedient, guarding what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, and abandon them in their beds, then strike them. But if they obey you, seek no way against them. God is Sublime, Great."

I am sorry to Allah for this, but as a young women, this has always made me doubt. Can someone link or explain this to me better?

Here are my questions:

  1. What does it really mean when the translation says: "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women"?
  2. Are women and men really equal in Islam? Or do they just have different roles?
  3. Is the Hijab mandatory and is it Haram not to wear one? (I do not wear one, but I will when I move out of my mothers house. I still dress modestly, just no hijab)
  4. What is the role of women in Islam?
  5. Does a married women have to ask her husband to leave the house?

I apologize if these questions offend anyone. That is not my intention, I am just trying to get a better understanding.

Thank you
