Hi, my boss is Muslim and she's GREAT. One of the best bosses I've ever had, but I just had some general questions about what is and what isn't okay with general day to day etiquette, because there's just so much I don't know. My intention isn't to be rude or to offend, so if I do, my most sincerest apologies. Just fyi, we are teachers and have cultivated a super healthy work environment and we all cooperate and work together very well.
- I know some Muslims cannot touch a person of the opposite gender, should I refrain from giving my boss a handshake or a hug?
- Are gifts of any sort okay? My coworkers and I gave our boss some flowers for teacher's appreciation week. Also, when I came back from vacation, I had given all my coworkers and my boss little souvenirs from my trip. Was this okay? I will be departing from my work in a couple months and would like to leave parting gifts, but I only want to do so if it's appropriate.
- Some of my Muslim friends I have had throughout life have expressed that greeting them with Salaam Alaikum was endearing to them. So at the time in which I did have Muslim friends, I always greeted them with Salaam Alaikum. While I have also heard from other people (just online) that if I myself am not Muslim, I should not greet a Muslim in this way. How do people feel about this?
- Are there any other general rules that I should be aware of in order to be respectful of my boss as a Muslim?
