I want to share a little conversation I had with a security staff in my building after suhoor this morning. He has been working as a security staff for 23 years. I asked him if he had family. "I have seven kids," he answered.

He went on to tell me that his oldest son, who went to vocational school, is working as an IT staff "with good salary" in one of the biggest company in Jakarta, and he's thinking of going to college. One of his daughter is working at a multinational company. The rest of his children are in school.

Recently, someone on Twitter calculated the cost to raise children in our country. He said to raise one children to adulthood, you need 3 billion rupiah (around 208 USD), which is a lot. I was wondering how can he raise seven children, which means 21 billion, with security staff salary, in a single-income family (his wife is a full-time mother)?

His answer struck me really deep.

"I don't use human math," he said. "I believe in Allah's math."

His answer makes me think about how sometimes we calculate too much, while our life has already been calculated and planned by Allah.

This is why I am grateful to have Islam. It gives me framework to see life as something that just happens. Yeah it is hard, but so what? Just do your best and tawakal.
